Celebrity Eclipse is a Solstice-class cruise ship, operated by Celebrity Cruises. She is the sister ship of Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox, and Celebrity Silhouette, which entered service in Summer of 2008, Summer of 2009 respectively. Celebrity Silhouette enters on Fall 2011. She is the third Solstice-class cruise ship. Celebrity Eclipse measures 122,000 gross tons and carries 2,852 passengers (double occupancy) plus crew.[3]

Celebrity Eclipse will sail from Southampton during Summer 2010 offering itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.[10]. In Northern Europe the ship will visit ports such as Warnemünde, Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn, Copenhagen or Zeebrugge.

Celebrity Cruises has announced that Celebrity Eclipse will return to sailing from Southampton in Summer 2011 [1].

The ship's godmother is Emma Pontin, a famous yachtswoman.[11]

Concept and construction

The keel of the Celebrity Eclipse was laid on 23 January 2009 and floated in her drydock in 28 February 2010.[3][5]

Celebrity Eclipse is the third Solstice-class ship, preceded by Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Equinox. Solstice-class ships are considered to be one of the environment-friendly ships in the world, which they are equipped with Photovoltaic System, an optimized hull design, highly-efficient hull coatings and lighting system using LED lights.[12] With these set of innovations, Solstice-class ships save 30% more energy, compared to other ships of its kind.[12]

Amenities

All Celebrity' ships feature a casino, multiple pools, shopping galleries, and other industry-standard amenities. The ship will also have many Celebrity trademarks such as Michael's Club, a Martini Bar, specialty coffee shop, formal main restaurant, and multiple specialty restaurants, including the Continental and European-inspired Murano which is also found on Celebrity Century. On April 26th, 2010 the Celebrity Eclipse will launch the iLounge.[13]

2010 Iceland Volcano Eruption

In response to the shutdown of UK airspace due to the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, the newly completed Eclipse was used to rescue 2000 British tourists stranded in Spain as "an act of goodwill" by the owners. The ship departed from Southampton for Bilbao on April 21, and returned on April 23.[14]

Operational History

Celebrity Eclipse' official maiden voyage was on April 29th, 2010, departing Southampton to Cobh, Ireland. Throughout the Summer, she sails the Mediterranean, Russia and Scandinavia. Celebrity Eclipse will be relocated in Miami in Winter 2010 to offer Caribbean cruises.[11]
