The ICGV Þór is an UT 512L type offshore patrol vessel designed by Rolls Royce for the Icelandic Coast Guard ship which is set to replace the aging ICGV Óðinn. The construction of the ship was approved by the Icelandic government on December 1, 2006 and launched April 29, 2009 at the ASMAR naval shipyard in Chile. Its main tasks will be EEZ patrol, fishery inspection and search and rescue support.

Design

The design, designated UT 512L, is an enlarged design of the Norwegian Coast Guard ship NoCGV Harstad which is designated UT 512. The design was changed based on Icelandic criteria for a larger and faster ship. The ship is expected to be delivered in early 2010.

2010 Chile Earthquake

According to a Janes naval newsbrief, the ICGV Þór may have been damaged beyond repair during the earthquake that hit Chile on February 27. The Þór was in the drydock at the ASMAR yard. An Ecuadorian submarine may also have been damaged beyond repair.[1]

The Icelandic Coast Guard however reports the ship is being repaired by ASMAR,[2] and that the damage to the vessel was minimal.[3]
