Summary

Description

United States Navy steamer USS Resolute off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, possibly while serving as a marker ship for trials of the new battleship USS Kearsarge (BB-5). (The source's suggestion that photo was taken possibly in July 1898 during transportation of Spanish prisoners-of-war captured during the Spanish-American War cannot be true, as the ship did not visit Portsmouth except during the 1899 trials of Kearsarge).
