Teazer (ship)

The Teazer was an American privateering vessel in The War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain.

On her first voyage she quickly captured six brigs and six schooners that she sent in to US ports as prizes. In December 1812, British sailors from the HMS San Domingo boarded Teazer and set fire to her.[1]

The British allowed her officers to go home on parole: that is, they were freed upon their promising that they would not again during the war bear arms against Great Britain. One of these officers was Lieutenant Frederick Johnson, who broke his parole to join the Young Teazer, which became one of the most successful American privateers of the War of 1812.

When the British finally cornered her, Johnson, her First Lieutenant, who wished to avoid capture, blew her up on June 27, 1813, killing almost her entire crew.[2]
