Cabo Rico Yachts
Cabo Rico Yachts is a small manufacturer of fiberglass, aft cockpit sailboats built in Costa Rica and designed by W.I.B. Crealock and Chuck Paine. The US headquarters are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[1] Sizes range from 34 to 56 feet. In the 1960s, John Schofield started the company in the corner of a British Leyland assembly plant in San Jose.[1]
History
In the 1960s, John Schofield started building sailboats in the corner of a little known British Leyland assembly plant in Costa Rica.[1] In the early 1970s, their first boat was a 36-foot ketch designed by William Crealock. The 36's were typically poorly built. Crealock would later design the Westsail 32. In the late 1970s, the unpopular 36-foot design became the Cabo Rico 38.[2] Company literature credits Dennis M. Garrett general manager of the company Fibro Tecnica S.A. as the designer.[2] In 1981, the 38 retailed for $89,000 as transported to Newport Beach, CA.[2] In the mid 1980's, two Canadians Fraser and Edi Smith purchased the company.[3]. First, they introduced a smaller 34-foot Crealock designed sistership to the 38.[4]. This was the first new design in awhile and long anticipated.[5] They added a 38 pilothouse version in 1991.[6] The most recent 40/42 and 54/56 models are by Chuck Paine.[1]
