INS Kolkata is the lead ship of her class of guided-missile destroyers with stealth features. She is the first of 3 multi-role destroyers of Project 15A currently under construction at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL). She will be armed with supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles[1] and Barak-NG SAMs.[2][3]

Design

Project 15A builds on the success of the Delhi class, by incorporating stealth features into the hull design. Two more vessels of the class are under construction. The project will cost Rs 8,459 crore.[2]

Four more vessels are planned under Project 15B, with updated stealth features.[2]

History

The keel of the Kolkata was laid in September 2003 and she was launched on 30 March 2006.[1] Commissioning was planned for 2010, but has now been delayed to 2012 as a result of design changes and delays in supply of propulsion systems from Ukraine and Russia.[2]
