Rockaway ferry
The New York Water Taxi-operated Rockaway Beach Ferry runs between the Wall Street Ferry Pier at the Financial District in Manhattan and the US Coast Guard's Riis Landing in Roxbury, Queens on summer weekends. The ferry, which uses leisure boat American Princess made its maiden voyage on May 12th, 2008,[1] and was set to make its final voyage on March 19, 2010 due to low ridership (an average of 160 commuters used the ferry on weekdays).[2] However, due to the swift action of City Councilman Eric Ulrich, as well as the Mayor's Office, Christine Quinn, and other members of the City Council in response to outrage by riders, the ferry was temporarily saved and funding continued until June 30, 2010, with the ferry's rush hour service indefinitely suspended on July 2, 2010.[3]
The $6 fare only recovers about thirty percent of the ferry's operating cost, forcing subsidies from the City Council to pay an average of $25 per passenger.[2]
