The General Russell Maxwell was a large freighter salvaged by Captain Edward Ellsberg in 1942. Captain Ellsberg renamed the former German freighter, the S.S. Liebenfels, after the commander of American forces in the Middle East, Army Major General Russell Maxwell, when he delivered it into Allied service. The Liebenfels had been scuttled to block the harbor Massawa. Ellsberg raised it and refitted it locally in Massawa.
