SS John P. Gaines
From SpottingWorld, the Hub for the SpottingWorld network...
The SS John P. Gaines was Liberty ship built during World War II.
She made voyages to England to bring supplies to the British during the war. On 24 November 1943 she broke in two and sank with the loss of 10 lives. It was later determined that the welded construction combined with the grade of steel used had caused significant brittle fractures that caused a sudden break. This was due to the unfamiliarity with the new welding technique, which was used instead of rivets. A number of other Liberty ships suffered similar problems, with several sinking.
