USS Augustus Holly (1861)
From SpottingWorld, the Hub for the SpottingWorld network...
USS Augustus Holly was a schooner purchased at Baltimore by the United States Navy on 13 August 1861.
She was to be laden with stone and sailed to the vicinity of Cape Hatteras and sunk as an obstruction to block one of the channels or inlets leading to the North Carolina sounds. The Stone Fleet was designed to block Confederate access during the American Civil War.
Unfortunately, no record has been found establishing whether or not she was ever used for this purpose and, if not, giving any clue as to her ultimate fate.
