SS Scharnhorst was a German ocean liner built in 1934. The ship was built by DeSchiMAG in Bremen, for the Norddeutscher Lloyd transportation company. The ship was trapped in Japan at the outbreak of World War II in Europe, and was later bought by the Japanese Navy and converted into the escort carrier Shinyo.[1] The ship was sunk by the American submarine Spadefish on 17 November 1944 in the Yellow Sea.
