The SMS Deutschland was a Kaiser class armored frigate designed by Sir Edward Reed and built by Samuda Brothers at Cubitt Town, London. The ship was fitted with a sailing rig which was later removed during refitting at the Imperial Dockyard at Wilhelmshaven in 1894. SMS Deutschland, together with SMS Gefion, was assigned to strengthen the East Asia Squadron at Kiautschou Bay in 1898.
SMS Deutschland returned to Germany in 1904 and was reclassified as hulk and renamed Jupiter. She was struck from the German Imperial Navy list on 21 May 1906, used as a target ship before being sold for scrap in 1908.
