The SMS Kaiser was the lead ship of the Kaiser class armored frigates. The ship was commissioned into the German Imperial Navy on 13 February 1875. In 1889, Emperor Wilhelm II was embarked on a tour visiting Genoa, Athens, Istanbul and Venice. She served after 1894 in Asian waters with the Far East Cruiser Division of the Imperial Navy. Kaiser was Rear Admiral Otto von Diederichs’ flagship of the Cruiser Division and participated in the amphibious landing in November 1897 during the German acquisition of Kiautschou Bay in northeastern China.
SMS Kaiser returned to Germany and starting on 3 May 1904 was converted to a hulk and renamed Uranus. Uranus was broken up in 1920 at Hamburg.
