Titanic Memorial (Belfast)

The Titanic Memorial is a memorial in Belfast, Northern Ireland to those who died in the RMS Titanic disaster. It is located in the grounds of Belfast City Hall. For some time it was obscured by the Belfast Wheel which was removed in April 2010.
Construction
Sir Thomas Brock designed the marble figure of Thane, the Titanic Memorial, in memorial to the victims of the sinking of the Titanic. The ship was built in Harland and Wolff's shipyard located in the east of the city. The monument was originally located at the front gate of City Hall, at the junction of Donegall Square North and Donegall Place.
Controversy and potential move
Belfast City Council voted to keep the Belfast Wheel on site for a further two years[1] from 1 September 2009. Subsequently, the Belfast Titanic Society objected to plans for the Belfast Wheel to remain at its current location because it obscures a memorial to the victims of the Titanic disaster. The big wheel structure sits around and on top of the memorial and the Society has proposed that the memorial be relocated to the north eastern corner of the City Hall grounds.[2]
On 30 November 2009 the location of the Belfast Wheel again caused a row, this resulted in the Lord Mayor of Belfast Naomi Long discussing the potential move of the Titanic Memorial before the 2012 anniversary.[3]
